OVERVIEW OF THE 6TH CHINA-AFRICA WATER FORUM

Day1
Monday 23 July 2018

Session A: Water rights and water economy
The key message was demonstrate how water can generate money directly or indirectly for the individuals, organizations and government. Therefore, the need to share technologies on how best we can look after such resource cannot be overemphasised. Examples were drawn from case studies on water market and water allocation, drip irrigation, desalination, bottled water from China and Africa.

Session B: Sustainable utilization and management of water resources
The key message was to share the improved understanding of the water resources in terms of its characteristics of the groundwater and surface water resources under different natural and human impacts and possible solutions were presented on how such water can be managed. Examples were drawn from case studies on water black bloom, removal of microcystins from constructed wetlands, abstraction rates of groundwater and interaction of groundwater with seawater from China and Africa.

Poster session through various case studies demonstrated technologies in the desalinating the water, assessing the risks to water, evaluating flow system and showcasing approaches for managing groundwater in irrigation and watershed area. Case studies came from both China and Africa.

Day2
Monday 24 July 2018

Session C: Impact of global change and climate variability on regional drought
and waterlogging
The key message was to demonstrate new technologies available on the market that can be used to manage the effects of extreme events at a regional scale. Therefore, the need to share knowledge on the availability of and how these technologies can be used to manage the impact of global change and climate variability was demonstrated. Examples were drawn from case studies on earth observations, artificial intelligence, dating and smart technologies from China and Africa.

Session D: Exploration and development of groundwater resources
The key message was to demonstrate available technologies that can be used to locate groundwater resources and the characteristics of groundwater before and as it is being used. Therefore, the need to share knowledge on these technologies and dynamics of groundwater was demonstrated. Examples were drawn from case studies on hydrogeophysics in Zimbabwe and karst faults basins and karst groundwater recharge from China.

Session E: Hydrology and Ecohydrology
The key message was to demonstrate the science of subsurface dams and rivers under karst environment in China that could inform management and utilization mechanisms. The global network sites in Arabian region and remediation technologies for soils and groundwater resource were showcased. Therefore, the need to share knowledge on Karst Rivers and groundwater resource and remedial technologies were fundamental to various researchers in the water sector.
